This course will prepare you for situations that people tend to find themselves in when things go wrong in the wilderness . Outside of a survival situation, this class will simply allow you to feel more comfortable in the desert.
3 Day Survival Basics (option)
About Difficulty Rating: Level 1 The survival basics class is designed for students that don’t have the time to take off for our 5 day standard, but still want to learn the minimum survival skills for being lost in the desert. We take the most important elements out of the 5 Day Outdoor Survival Skills class and condense the class to the “core three” priorities. Your first priorities in a “lost in the desert” scenario, are always shelter, water, fire. The survival basics class will cover these three topics in depth, so you can be prepared for the worst.
What to expect - Day 1 We will cover the psychology of survival and the rule of three's. We will then move on to make tools that you may use in a survival situation which you will be using the rest of the trip. We will make a rabbit stick, spear, cordage, bone knife, discussing the creation of water vessels, and more. You will learn the priorities of survival and just as importantly, how to focus and occupy your mind in a survival situation
Day 2 We will cover fire. We will teach several fire methods in the survival basics class. You will learn primitive friction fires along with modern techniques. We will also be teaching about fire building for a variety of specialized circumstances. Fire is of the utmost importance in a survival situation. It provides you a way to filter or boil water, cook food, all while keeping you warm, and preventing hypothermia. Hydration will also be covered. The importance of hydration in the desert can be life or death. We will go over locating water in the desert and different ways of harvesting it. Also which plants can provide hydration and what plants can actually dehydrate you.
Day 3 We will take you through the steps of building primitive shelters. We will show you how to build a shelter, that will keep you warm and dry as well as provide shade. You will learn proper placement of the framework, proper thickness and height of debris insulation, and proper waterproofing techniques. Uses of your bandanna or shemagh will be incorporated into the shelter discussion also.
The 5 Day Survival Course Will include the 3 days Survival Basics with an additional 2 days of more in-depth, hands on training
Difficulty Rating: Level 2
Day 4 We will go for a short hike( 5 miles or less) bringing the tools we have created and using them. During this hike we will be locating a variety of desert edibles. We will also identify, gather, and discuss items which can be used during a survival situation. During the hike Justin will teach you about desert awareness and the importance of staying safe. Tracking and stalking prey can be discussed when we find animal tracks.
Day 5 We will go for another short hike (5 miles or less) bringing the tools that you have created. During this hike we will discuss land navigation in the desert and how to read the land. Knowing your directions and how the desert plants act as compasses. By this time, you have learned a lot and will have several opportunities to apply some of the knowledge discussed in the lectures. You probably have a lot of projects not finished by this point also. Don't worry those can be worked on too.
